Currently, there are approximately 11,500 preventale deaths annually due to benzodiazepine with opioid overdose related deaths. 

Patients should not be on benzodiazepines if they are on skeletal muscle relaxants, opioids, or z-drugs. 

To enhance clinicians' knowledge of the dangers associated with combined use of benzodiazepines (BZDs) and opioids, benzodiazepine pharmacology and deprescribing recommendations.

Primary care physicians and other interested clinicians

Learning Objectives

Describe the risks of co-prescribing opioids and benzodiazepines.

Review the pharmacology of benzodiazepines.

Recognize when to taper and strategies in implementation. 

Review the management of withdrawal.
