CVA- Opioid Reduction Management
The 2016 CDC guidelines reveals that the evidence supporting opioid therapy for chronic pain is weak. The guideline also highlights that the risks associated with chronic opioid use exponentially increases at dosages exceeding 50 milligram morphine equivalents (MME) per day. In the central valley, there are about 571 patients taking opioid doses exceeding 100 MME per day. A survey of our physicians involved in prescribing chronic opioids need support at multiple levels. one of the support is to provide education on how to engage in difficult conversations with these patients regarding opioid tapering. The second level of educational support is in providing educations on appropriate pain management using alternative modes of pain management as well as appropriate use of opioids.
1. To improve and establish the practice of engaging patients with chronic pain on high dose opioids so that they can be enrolled in tapering plans that will allow then to either completely get off the steroids or to reduce the doses to safer levels, such as doses not exceeding 100 MME/day.
2. TPMG P&T opioid reduction work group will be leading this effort and will be engaging the TPMG communication consultant group to provide the education. The educational content will be developed by the P&T leadership and champions for chronic pain management, the pain management department, and the communication consultants.
Our primary audience will be AFM physicians, however all physicians interested in treating chronic pain are advised to attend.
After completing this program, you will be able to effectively initiate an opioid tapering conversion with any patient on high dose opioids with then intention of entering them into a tapering plan that will allow them to either stop using opioids completely for chronic pain or to continue using opioids at much lower and safer doses for chronic pain.
