NSA 11/26/19 HBS VAC Sickle Cell Management - Part 2

Physicians will expand the knowledge of basic aspects of care for patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Specifically, highlighted are several clinical actions to enhance preventive care, manage some of the most common acute and chronic complications of SCD, and initiate and monitor the two Sickle Cell Disease-specific disease- modifying therapies, hydroxyurea and chronic blood transfusion therapy, helping to reduce unnecessary blood transfusions and better patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives

1.  Recognize when blood transfusion or exchange transfusion is indicated.

2.  Assess the management of acute chest syndrome, sickle cell pain crisis, and indications for acute hospitalization.

3.  Identify the indications for pharmaceuticals used in management of sickle cell disease.
