NSA 1/17/19 HOSPW Counseling Patients on Weight in a Brief Encounter

Title: Counseling Patients on Weight in a Brief Encounter: Tools and Resources from the Healthy Weight Task Force

Speakers:  Andrea Notch, MPH, CWPC, Program Manager Health Education, NSA Healthy Weight Task Force Co-Chair, and Carolyn Castillo, Clinical Health Educator II, NSA Healthy Weight Task Force Co-Chair

More than two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Physician counseling may help patients lose weight; however, physicians perceive these discussions as somewhat futile and time-consuming. Fewer than half of primary care physicians for adults talk to their patients about diet, exercise and weight management consistently, while pediatricians are somewhat more likely to do so, according to two new studies.

The desired practice is that ALL patients with a BMI of 25 or above will receive brief counseling on weight management.
