NSA 6/27/17 VAL MED PrEP 101
Single Event for Medicine Department
Speaker: Robert Quon, MD
Planner: Lauran Mizock, MD
"PrEP Medication" stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. The word "prophylaxis" means to prevent or control the spread of an infection or disease. The goal of PrEP is to prevent HIV infection from taking hold if you are exposed to the virus. This is done by taking one pill every day. These are some of the same medicines used to keep the virus under control in people who are already livng with HIV.
There is a lack of adequate understanding of who should be offered PrEP and expertise for the PMD's in having that discussion with their patients.
Kaiser's desired outcome with this patient population is the prevention of HIV Seroconversion in our high risk populations for HIV Transmission.
