Course Description:

The Schwartz Center Rounds provides physicians and staff an arena in which to discuss the emotional impact and challenges of being a health care provider, with a goal of improving caregiver-patient relationships. Provides support and advances compassionate health care in which caregivers, patients, and their families relate to one another in a way that provides hope to the patient, support to caregivers and sustenance to the healing process.

The intent of this conference is to allow all health care providers, especially physicians, to recognize the effect of their work upon their own lives and to learn from others on the health care team about recognizing and managing the emotional impact of challenging clinical situations, such as caring for the demanding difficult patient, or caring for a co-worker. A hallmark of the program is interdisciplinary dialogue. Panelists from diverse disciplines participate in the Rounds, including physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, allied health professionals and chaplains focusing on the human dimension of medicine and sharing perspectives on the case and broader related issues of emotional impact and challenges in dealing with difficult cases. Participants learn from their co-workers on how to address self-care and provide more compassionate patient care.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Enhance our ability to provide compassionate care by gaining insight on the effects of illness on the lives of patients, family members and clinicians.

2. Improve teamwork and communication by exploring physician's and staff's emotional responses to providing care in challenging cases.
