Content:

This CME presentation will outline and define the general principles for effectively working with transgender and gender non-conforming patients.The importance of educating all providers who provide direct clinical care to this population will be highlighted, including a literature review on this topic, identifying the core struggles faced by transgender patients, and challenges in accessing affirmative healthcare. Identifying and describing key components that are needed in order to provide to a safe, welcoming healthcare environment will be presented, including the necessity of understanding terminology related to transgender issues. An introduction to "Transgender Emergence" (Lev, 2004) will be summarized, reviewing an identity development model that focuses on applying clinical interventions, that are based on developmental stages within this model. Lastly, this CME talk will recognize trans-affirmative medical transition options, including those offered through Kaiser Permanente. This will include clinical examples that explicitly focus on working with non-binary transgender individuals.
