Welcome to Kaiser Permanente San Francisco CME

Physicians at Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco Medical Center (KPSF) are dedicated to providing the highest quality care to their patients. As a California Medical Association (CMA) accredited provider of continuing medical education (CME), KPSF seeks not only to build skills of our physicians, but also to affect and promote change in physician practice, patient care, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

The purpose of our CME program is to provide high-quality, balanced, evidence-based educational activities that will address identified quality or professional practice gaps of our physician learners. The program is designed to build physician skills, enhance practice performance, and whenever possible, improve patient care outcomes. KPSF CME is well-integrated at various levels in the medical center and strives to be a strategic asset to enhance physician practice and performance on quality metrics and respond to patient and organizational needs.

The content of our CME program spans both primary care and specialty care. Educational programs have multiple purposes: to impart knowledge about clinical practice, raise awareness and discuss issues revolving around diversity, medical-legal, and patient safety; to update physicians of new pharmacotherapies, procedures and skills; to improve communication skills; to fulfill regulatory requirements; to emphasize quality improvement within a department or within the medical center; to promote and encourage physician involvement in the community beyond our medical center. Additionally, content is developed to incorporate Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Institute of Medicine (IOM) core competencies. Cultural and linguistic competencies within our highly diverse community as well as understanding our patient population are our key focus.

We strive to address the educational needs of our target audience, which is comprised of primary care and specialty care physicians. We also encourage attendance by other health care professionals and allied health personnel, who serve as an integral part of the health care team, as well as non-TPMG physicians in the community.

The type of activities offered ranges from 1 hour lectures to 1-2 day off-site events. Our educational activities include department-specific, interdepartmental and specialty-specific. These activities take the form of live conferences, regularly scheduled series. Formats range from didactic lectures, hands-on workshops, case-based conferences, interactive discussions, journal clubs, Q&A panels. The educational design, instructional method and learning format for each event is chosen to best serve the target audience.
