Desired Practice:

Ideally, physicians and staff would share a mental model for how to recognize a crisis, elicit necessary support for a crisis, and how to debrief after a crisis so that performance improvement is built into each potentially adverse event. Furthermore, the communication skills learned in simulations would support a speak up culture where staff appreciate
the importance of voicing concerns and feel empowered to do so even if they are not sure of the diagnosis.

Objectives:

By the end of the activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Provide concise clinical information on a deteriorating patient via Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR).
  2. Cite effective communication strategies for teamwork in a crisis situation.
  3. Define the role of a leader in a crisis situation.
  4. Explain the importance of role clarity in teamwork.
  5. Give examples of mutual support in a crisis situation.
